The Source Magazine stops selling porn

Message from UrbanEstablished - I applaud The Source for making a stand and taking the magazine in a new direction. From day one I have supported The Source Magazine through the good, the bad and the ugly. Good luck to The Source and I wish you guys the best! U.E.

Hip hop magazine makes effort to clean up image.

Hip hop magazine heavy-weight The Source took steps to break a long standing relationship between hip hop and the porn industry by no longer running ads for pornographic movies, adult web sites or escort services.

The long running adult ads also known as “booty ads” featuring scantily-clad women are now banned from the Source’s pages and its web site.

Said the co-publisher, “I realize the risk that we’re taking. But we don’t want to just glorify the lowest-hanging fruit.” “There’s a lot of people that want hip-hop but don’t want some of the filth that some of the business carries with it.”

Several critics cited the Magazine only decided to discontinue “booty ads” after many pornography businesses went bankrupt during the economic downturn and the demand for those type ads were drastically reduced.

Said one reader, “They just some hypocrites because they sold those ads forever until the economy tanked. Let’s see if they continue their high-and-mighty stance when the economy recovers and those ad dollars go to their competitors”.

Just in time for #44 the New Era Obama Fitted

Buffalo hat maker New Era Cap Co. is launching a line of Barack Obama-inspired headwear that draws from the incoming president's campaign themes.

A red baseball cap has Obama written in black and the number 44 in the lower corner to commemorate the 44th president. The words "change" and "progress" appear on black caps.

The $35 caps are being sold beginning Thursday at New Era's flagship stores in Buffalo and Atlanta, as well as at the Villa in Philadelphia and Finish Line in Chicago and Washington.

New Era says it's giving a portion of proceeds to charity.

The Obama-inspired caps are in the popular 59Fifty style. Those are the fitted caps worn by Major League baseball players and celebrities.

New Book 'The History Of Mixtapes' Coming To Stores

Originally Published on AllHipHop.com

One of the pioneers of Atlanta’s DJ scene has tapped a group of writers to help him recount what he calls one of Hip-Hop’s untold stories.

DJ Mars and his team are putting the finishing touches on The History of Mixtapes, a coffee table book due out later this year.

The collection of photos and essays examines how mixtapes have impacted not only DJ culture, but how the format helped spread Hip-Hop music as well.

With interviews spotlighting the likes of DJ Hollywood, Brucie B, Kid Capri, SnS, Ron G, Dexterity and J Period, The History of Mixtapes explores this phenomenon inherently created by the Hip-Hop generation and the stars who have emerged from the movement over the years.

“When you hear a publication write about mixtapes, they usually only write about certain DJs or who’s hot today,” Mars told AllHipHop.com. “But the mixtape game didn’t start as a popularity contest. It just turned into that.

“When mixtape culture gets written about, it doesn’t get covered in its entirety. I just saw a void that needed to be filled,” DJ Mars said.

To promote the his latest project, Mars has launched a new website celebrating all things old school and Hip-Hop.

HistoryofMixtapes.com offers visitors a chance to revisit classic interviews and performances, old school commercials, classic West Coast releases and even wrestling performances.

The site also showcases those DJs who have maximized their popularity, branding themselves far beyond the world of mixtapes.

Additionally, each Monday, DJ Mars makes one classic mixtape from his personal collection available for download.

“I want people to get used to coming to the site to learn,” Mars says. “I wanted the site to be a credible source of information, real esoteric. So I put classic stuff on there. Stuff you haven’t seen, stuff you miss.”

The History of Mixtapes will be published independently in late fall 2009.

Soon Hip Hop is Going to Deconstruct

Soon rap as we know it is going to deconstruct and the new music is going to start. Just this morning I was reading a post on my favorite message board. An industry cat posted his opinion about the state of Hip Hop as he sees it today, and to be honest he brought up some valid points. What’s going on with Hip Hop music today? We see the outrageous antics of established rappers and up and comers day in and day out. There’s not a message board, blog or website that does not have a story about rappers today doing stupid stuff. What happen to making good music? Just recently I read where Master P’s nephew got a video beating up Young Berg. We see videos almost weekly about who stole who’s chain, who smacked who and who is beefing this week. To make it worst the crime, beef or altercation is instantly put up on Youtube for the world to see. Damn they not even worried about getting caught, these cats want instant fame. What’s going on when we see Joe Budden with more reality TV videos than he has actual songs! Man it’s starting to get crazy! Who’s making good music while 90% of these so called artists are up to this coonery!!!

Don’t get me wrong. There is still good music coming out from a few artist. But then we have a lot of artist putting out straight garbage. I am not going to throw any artist names, but you know who they are. If there is one person reading this blog that has never asked him or herself the question, “Why the hell did they even put that out”? I will be amazed. Everyday I here a song and I am like, “WHOA”!

So how is Hip Hop going to deconstruct? In my opinion we are seeing it already. Kanye’s last album which was more geared to a pop crowd. We see the auto-tune jumping from R&B and now being used in just about every other Hip Hop song that makes it to the radio. Hip Hop is changing, but is it changing for the better? Are we ushering in a new era of Hip Hop built off of copying each other styles? Are artist only putting out music that they think will sell or are artist putting out music that they believe in and feel good about?

Just my two cents, leave a comment and let me know how you feel. Better yet check out these clips, whose to blame the artist putting them out or us watching them?

Notorious Jan 16 2009 Be There

Okay, so the hype for the new Notorious film is really starting to build. Please believe I will go see this movie the weekend it opens. Industry people who have seen advance screenings of the movie say it will be an instant hit or better yet an instant hood classic. We have been also reading reports that Lil Kim is pissed and does not like they way she was portrayed in the movie. We all know that the 90’s era pretty much will go down as the best era of Hip Hop. During this era we had classic albums dropped by Nas, Wu-Tang, Biggie, and Redman among the few notables. Personally I saw Biggie twice when he came to the city. I saw a set where Clark Kent, Biggie and Busta Rhymes graced us with a classic show. Better yet Gravy the actor/rapper portraying Biggie in the upcoming movie is coming to the city this weekend to host a talent show, I will definitely be in the house for that one. All in all I expect the movie to be an instant hit and can’t wait to see it! That’s right January 16 go out and support the movie and all the people who worked hard to bring this movie to life. So yes see the movie and then get the bootleg, you know how we do! Please support this film!

Un-Fakeable Air Jordans for 2009

Those cats going to the local flea market or swap meet to cop a pair of Jordans may need to rethink their strategy. Your local police force may have not been able to stop the bootleggers but evidently technology has.

The Jordan brand has always gone head to head with the counterfeiters, and last year’s 23 seemed to be a nail in the proverbial Poo Chen coffin. The final “numbered” Jordan was so intricate that it was practically impossible to fake. For its 2009 sneaker, Air Jordan 2009 will begin to launch on Valentine’s Day, February 14.

Idle Warship - Try It On (Howwedoitoverhere)

My resolution for 2009, is to promote real Hip Hop no matter what! It's great to be back online in 09 and the first post of the new year will be a track by Kweli, Res & Graph Nobel flowing over Busta’s “How We Do It Over Here”. 2009 looks to be promising with a slew of new artist dropping in the first quarter! Get ready for the ride!!!
